I quickly worked my way through the episodes of the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors.

If you know anything about Dr. Who, you know about his Sonic Screwdriver. On the show, this fine bit of alien technology seals doors, hacks into computers, and may even drive screws.

Now, you can get this replica of the 11th Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, as well as several earlier models, from ThinkGeek. They’ve got a bunch of other Dr. Who stuff, too. Great stuff for the geeks on your holiday shopping list.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06085160702026241957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11467788.post-58690300577347827742011-11-19T12:21:00.000-05:002011-11-19T12:21:41.193-05:00World's largest 3D painting creates nifty optical illusionWorld's largest 3D painting creates nifty optical illusion:

Actors pose with gym equipment on what the Guinness World Records bills as the world's largest 3D painting, at Canary Wharf in London November this week. The top floor apartment designed by Ukrainian architecture studio 2B Group is located in a building in Kiev, Ukraine. The inspiring interior design captures a multitude of styles, all designed to offer a seamless collection of textures, colors, shapes and materials. Wood, concrete, glass, metal, exposed brick – all these materials found their place in the apartment’s interior design and surprising lines and details were shaped with their help. A green wall in the living/dining space brings nature indoors and a small terrace just above it allows a fantastic view of the mirror-framed ray-textured wall displaying the TV and sound system. Design details like the fabulous concrete wine rack embedded in the kitchen wall or the perfectly embedded stone poufs give the living space a unique, strong character. A red container shelters a black and yellow bathroom. The green wall continues down to the lower floor, where an impressive lounge/home office space and a second living space lead to the gorgeous master bedroom. The children’s room and bathroom are cheery and bold, creating an inspiring place to grow up in. The exceptional rooftop terrace is lined with geometric floor lights and features everything needed to enjoy the best of modern architecture and lifestyle. Looking at the photos, you can see how amazing details were placed in the right spots, creating a one-of-a-kind loft apartment, on my list for the best dream homes.

<img Guest House

via Tiny House Blog by Kent Griswold on 1/6/11

As many of you know I am a huge fan of floating homes and have often thought of starting another blog focusing just on them. Recently through a google alert I discovered this little floating guest house in Portland, Oregon. Designed and constructed by a company called Studio Hamlet Architects, PLLC based in Bainbridge Island, WA. Julia Zander was kind enough to send me some wonderful photographs and gave me permission to share this project with you.

Floating Retreat
This floating guest house is nestled among a community of eclectic houseboats on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. The project was designed to work as a part-time residence for a couple's use while their main floating home is being built. After moving into the main house, the guest house will become a vacation retreat for visiting family and friends.

Big Ideas With Small Spaces
We had to deal with the marina's very restrictive rules for a guest house size. The marina restricts the size of a float to 18'x34' and restricts the maximum height above the water to 15'-6". The fire code requires perimeter access on all sides of a structure, and with the inclusion of an exterior deck, we only had a 14'-9" x 22'-6" (332sf) outside perimeter structure footprint to work with. Not much room for the owner's desire for a self-sufficient dwelling, including a kitchen, bathroom, dining, living space and sleeping loft.

The design makes the most of its limited space and uses various design techniques to create a feeling of spaciousness. The house feels much larger and more spacious than its 433 sf. The careful design avoids uncomfortably tight spaces. You don't bump your elbows against the walls and the scale doesn't make you feel you are too big in a small space. The guest house can even handle extra guests. The dining booth can comfortably seat up to five and the couch coverts to a bed, accommodating two additional overnight visitors.

We Started With A Good Foundation
We constructed a concrete float for the guest house. Like a good foundation, it has a substantial feeling and carries the comfort of knowing it will require only minimal maintenance in the future. Concrete floats are rare in the Portland area, but the common practice of building log floats is beginning to be questioned with all the maintenance issues and the diminishing number of available quality logs.

Showering Meditation And A Cozy Place To Sleep
A skylight strategically placed above the shower illuminates the green glass tile. Combined with the warm grey colored cement shower pan, the space feels peaceful and serene. The cozy loft has just enough room to crawl up into bed. This bedroom and built-in shelving has a feeling of protection under the eaves, with a view looking out over the water.

The Natural World Surrounds
Although downtown Portland is minutes away, the location feels like you are on a constant nature retreat. Ducks, turtles, beavers, bald eagles and osprey inhabit the local environment. Daylighting is constantly changing as sunlight dances off the water. The corrugated metal ceiling catches the reflected light from the abundant windows and mimics the rippling water outside.

Things you can do from here:

Subscribe to Tiny House Blog using Google Reader

Get started using Google Reader to easily keep up with all your favorite sites

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06085160702026241957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11467788.post-8274886090743032112011-01-07T19:23:00.001-05:002011-01-07T19:23:53.477-05:00How To Set Up A Home Server With Amahi [Linux]

Sent to you by Sparkie via Google Reader:

How To Set Up A Home Server With Amahi [Linux]

via MakeUseOf.com by James Bruce on 1/7/11

For a number of years now I've been running Microsoft Windows Home Server on a spare machine I had, as it's a great way to use up all the spare hard drives that I find lying around the house. It has served me well as a networked storage device and streaming media server, as well as providing me with automated nightly back-ups (of my Windows systems at least).

However, the Home Server team recently announced that they would not be including the disk pooling technology in the next release, so I've been looking for an alternative. Amahi Home Server - a Linux based solution – might just be the answer.

First off, let me explain why anyone would even need a server for their home.

In the modern home, there are sometimes a lot of media and computing devices. At one point last year, my home network consisted of:

An Xbox 360 and Playstation.

A network connected LCD TV in the living room.

2 laptops.

2 desktops.

1 iPad and 2 iPhones.

A number of guests who would bring their machines round.

Admittedly, that is a lot for anyone – but even with just a few connected systems, they all need to access shared media (movies, music and such) and all could benefit from a backup every now and again. A home server can provide:

A central place to store files and media and well as stream those on your home network.

A central backup location for computers.

Printer sharing.

Much, much more.

We covered setting up a home media server with Linux or Windows, or as a UPNP device for streaming media, but nothing that really ties it all together in one package.

Of course, all that media storage means lots of hard drives, and this is where Microsoft Home Server really excelled. Normally, when you add a hard drive to a computer you must partition it, assign drive letters (like C: for your system, D: for data). Not so with "drive pooling" technology. With pooled storage, you simply throw another hard drive in and tell the computer "here, use that as you wish".

Curiously, Microsoft announced that this amazing functionality would be GONE from the next version of Windows Home Server – the excuse being given that "business users simply don't have need of it". At that point, I officially began searching for a suitable replacement, and would like to show you what I found.

Amahi Home Server

Before we begin, I must tell you that it is no surprise that this alternative is based upon Linux, and as such will require a degree of "fiddling" to get things right, and even such simple tasks as adding a hard drive can become confusing with a mountain of disinformation that the Linux community provides – but let's take that journey together, and let me guide you through the basics of getting your server up and running.

Since I approached this with zero experience of Linux, I think you can too. In future articles, I'll show you exactly how you can accomplish more advanced tasks like setting up a printer, adding hard drives, setting up backup etc.

Quick Install Guide

I find the guide on the Amahi page rather lacking, so here's a quick summary.

Download the Fedora 12 DVD (more download links). Boot from the DVD – the install is fairly basic with help at every step.

I assume you are setting this up on a dedicated machine, so select "use entire drive" when it asks how you'd like to set up the drives. You will lose all data currently on the drive.

When you reach the "software repositories" install stage, stop and click on the "Add additional software" button.

Enter Repository Name: Amahi and Repository URL: http://f12.amahi.org

You will need to be plugged into your network, with the Internet on.

Walk through the rest of the install and select to sync with network time.

When you first log into Fedora, there will be some icons on your desktop. Click the one labelled Install Amahi and you'll be off. You'll also need to create your free account at amahi.org, and note down your network settings to create an install code. If you don't know the network settings for your network you can read the tutorial here to find out. Most home networks have their routers on 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, so enter this where it says "Gateway". The field is simply where you can make up an address for your Amahi server – it defaults to 192.168.0.10, but I changed mine to .101 just because I have a lot of devices and thought it might conflict. If you only have a few systems, sticking with .10 is fine.

You'll then be given a short code to enter into the Amahi installer on your server desktop. After you've entered your code and run through the installer, you'll need to restart.

After restarting the server and other computers on the network, everything is basically set up. I was able to log into the machine remotely at http://hda, so theoretically you could now disconnect the monitor and put the server in the cupboard.

The installer mentions turning off the DHCP function on your router, but in my case that wasn't necessary. You may need to log into your router or cable modem if you're having problems, but try without first.

Exploring the full range of features available in the server is subject matter for a future article, but suffice to say the server is now operational, so you should start to add some media files to the network shares. Should you feel adventurous, there's a support forum on the Amahi site, and a directory of apps you can enhance your server with.

If you're already running a home server, tell us about it and your experiences in the comments.

<a In short, they probably would as they tend to engage the audience well, allowing them to really follow what you're trying to teach them.

Now if you just don't have the budget for a full-price smartboard, here's something you will love: it's a neat hack to use a Wii remote (Wiimote) and an infrared pen as a smartboard. Using a few cheap tools you might already have alongside some free software, you have the recipe for a smartboard. This is a fine hour for open source and hacking popular gadgets!

Why Use A Smartboard?

Backing up a bit in case you're not completely familiar with smartboards, essentially a smartboard is when your computer screen is projected onto a white screen and you can manipulate this projection as if it's a giant touch-screen.

Now, here's a quick run-down of the sorts of things you can do with a smartboard:

Use interactive websites in demonstrations.

Highlighting text while discussing it.

Draw to help explain complex processes.

Record your entire lecture for replay later.

Play games as a group.

Create visualisations of data while obtaining the data.

Check out this presentation for more ideas.

Basics Of A Wiimote Smartboard

Johnny Chung Lee is the designer of the Wiimote Smartboard and the full instructions and YouTube demo are available on his website. Essentially, the Wiimote Smartboard works like this: the Wii remote can track up to four infrared signals. So if you project your computer screen onto a white screen (or just use a large LCD monitor) and point your Wii remote in the same direction, you can interact with your computer using up to four infrared pens.

What You Need

You will need:

Wii Remote (cheap imitations don't usually work as well).

A reliable way of mounting your Wii remote and holding it still.

Infrared pen (check compatibility with your chosen software before buying – or, build your own IR pen if you're keen).

Computer with Bluetooth (to connect to Wii Remote).

Large monitor or projector and white screen (anything to make it bigger).

Software to make it work (there's a few choices – read on).

Hints

Before you run into trouble, take this advice:

If you're using a monitor, look for an infrared pen which doesn't require you to press down in order to activate. Look for a switch on the side of the pen as well as a click button.

Two Wii remotes work better than one (in case the signal gets blocked by you standing in the way).

Try the Wiimote Project forum for help.

If you want extra guidance and tips, try the SmoothBoard Wiki.

Calibration can be tricky – ensure your devices will work with your software before you buy, then check the forum if you need specific help.

Software Options

There are free and paid software options available:

Johnny Lee's original Windows WiiWhiteboard Software.

Free Java-based multi-platform open source software option at uweschmidt.org.

Sourceforge Wii Whiteboard Project.

Smoothboard Windows Shareware (not free).

Potentially many more options available to purchase.

How To Make Your Wii-Remote Smartboard

Install whichever version of the Wii-remote smartboard software you've chosen. Then set up your computer with your projector or large monitor as you wish.

To connect your Wii remote to your computer, turn on Bluetooth for the computer, then press the 1 and 2 buttons on the Wii remote to pair the devices.

Place the Wii remote so that it's facing the board, not less than 45 degrees angle from the board. Try to make it so that you won't accidentally block the line between the Wii remote and your infrared pen with your body.

Run the software and ensure you calibrate your infrared pen as per the instructions. From now on, you should be able to use the pen as if it's a mouse — clicking and dragging objects, drawing or highlighting text.

Love Hacking?

If you're a bit of a DIY hacker, then you might also love these posts:

10+ Awesome Geeky Halloween DIY House Decoration Ideas

How To Make Your Own DIY Vented Laptop Tray

10 Lesser Known How-To Video Websites for DIY Stuff

5 Best Sites For Free Halloween Do-It-Yourself Projects

DiyOrNot: Helps You Decide If You Should Do It Yourself

Let us know how you use your smartboard (Wii-remote variety or purpose-built). In the blog post, Phil Plait writes:

That is just about the finest imagery of Jupiter from the ground I have ever seen! Look at the detail: the Great Red Spot, the string of brownish storms just above and trailing behind it, the white ovals, the whorls and streamers of air separating the horizontal banding. It's breathtaking. And there's this overwhelming three-dimensionality to it, a powerful sense that this is a giant planet. It's simply stunning.

To get this phenomenal animation, Damian used a trick well-known among astrophotographers now, too: video cameras take very short exposures, which essentially freezes out the microturbulence in the Earth's air, preserving the finest detail that is otherwise smeared out. By looking at individual still frames you can pick the ones that are the best, then string them together to make a video like the one above.

[Thanks, Rach!]

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
Read the Full Story » | More on MAKE » | Comments » | Read more articles in Science | Digg this!

Things you can do from here:

Subscribe to MAKE Magazine using Google Reader

Get started using Google Reader to easily keep up with all your favorite sites

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06085160702026241957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11467788.post-22349282584488852392010-12-26T18:40:00.001-05:002010-12-26T18:40:40.402-05:00Lunar Eclipse

Sent to you by Sparkie via Google Reader:

Lunar Eclipse

via Boing Boing by Mike Brown on 12/20/10

(images via Wikipedia)
For the past two weeks, as we've followed the moon nearly halfway around the sky, I've talked about the relative positions of the earth and the moon and the sun using a simple system clock-based system to point to everything. As we've been doing it, we're looking down from above the north pole of the earth, which you can draw as a clock face.
The sun is off in the distance in the 6 o'clock position. Almost two weeks ago, when we first saw the little sliver of a moon and the remainder of the disk full of earthshine, the moon was around the 5 o'clock position. When it flew past Jupiter almost a week ago it had moved up to 3 o'clock, and now, as it is coming around to full, it is nearly to 12 o'clock.
Often when you present this way of looking at positions of the sun and the earth and the moon to kids for the first time (and it work even better if you use a lamp for the sun, your head for the earth, and a Styrofoam ball for the moon), you will be asked "but wait, how come we can ever see the full moon?"
It's true that in this simple view every time the moon moves to the 12 o'clock position it should fall into the earth's shadow and disappear. We should never see a full moon. The only reason we do is because the orbit of the moon is tilted by just a little bit, so most of the time when the moon reaches the 12 o'clock position it is a little above or a little below the long shadow of the earth.
That's the same reason, of course, that we don't get eclipses of the sun every time the moon is at the 6 o'clock position. It's too bad, really, because if eclipses of the sun actually happened every month maybe I would finally get a chance to see one. Which I still haven't. Which makes me bitter.

Every once in a while, though, the sun, earth, and moon do line up just right, and at the precise moment when the moon should be completely full, it instead really does disappear into a lunar eclipse.
One of those times when this happens is tonight. Starting at 9:30pm here in southern California (where, incidentally, we received record rainfall yesterday and the probability of clear skies for tonight hovers in the low zeros), or 5:30am GMT, the moon first touches the earth's shadow. I like to think of it from the perspective of someone on the moon watching. First the limb of the earth touches the sun, then slowly the earth slides across, making the lunar landscape darker and darker, until finally the entire sun is extinguished and it is almost as dark as a frigid lunar nighttime.
The full eclipse starts at 11:41pm PST for me, when I will be looking up at the clouds in wonder, or 7:41am GMT, and lasts a little longer than an hour before the moon slowly reappears.
If you're lucky enough to have clear skies and be awake for that hour of total eclipse, one of the most interesting things that you will notice is that the moon doesn't actually disappear, but instead can turn a dim spooky red. What is going on? Let's think about standing on the surface of the moon again. From the moon's perspective, the earth is new - totally unilluminated - and though you could see some of the brighter lights of cities and fishing fleets it is not enough to light your landscape. But with the sun directly behind the earth, all parts of the earth's atmosphere would glow with a 360 degree ring of sunset, so all around you would not be night, but an eerie twilight.
It's a sight no one has ever seen. No pictures exist anywhere of the view from the moon of the earth, with its full atmosphere aglow, yet I still know that it must be one of the most wondrous sights in the solar system. I wish I could be up there on the moon tonight staring back towards home, but I'll just have to imagine - as you should too - that moment, standing on the edge of some crater, looking out across the desolate lunar landscape.
You're looking up at the earth but you can't see too much yet other than the glare from the quickly shrinking sliver of sun. Suddenly the entire sun is covered, your eyes adjust and you look up to see the red glow all the way around, the tiny outer cover of earth that makes it home.
You watch for an hour as the glow changes with the clouds and with the slow rotation of the earth until suddenly a little sliver of sun appears from the western side of the earth and you're quickly blinded again as lunar day time slowly reappears across your landscape, lighting your footprints in the dust showing you the way to begin the long walk home.

Things you can do from here:

Subscribe to Boing Boing using Google Reader

Get started using Google Reader to easily keep up with all your favorite sites

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06085160702026241957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11467788.post-55567188592071618452010-12-26T18:39:00.001-05:002010-12-26T18:39:47.587-05:00Lighthouse frozen in ice

Sent to you by Sparkie via Google Reader:

Lighthouse frozen in ice

via Boing Boing by David Pescovitz on 12/20/10

Above is a lighthouse in Cleveland, Ohio. This unusual building accommodates over 10 000 books belonging to the architect and his wife, a scholar of Japanese history. You can look at the incredible looking studying refuge as a 20 feet cube filled with knowledge. While the ground floor has no windows as it was especially developed for storing books, the upper level is open towards the inspiring natural environment. The large windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding forest and contribute to creating a charming retreat, perfect for studying and relaxation. There is plenty of space within the beautiful studio, enough to shelter a comfy sofa, work spaces and bookshelves. Could you imagine a better office? surprise attack against the United States naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 350 Japanese aircraft attacked in two waves, strafing, dropping bombs and torpedoes. Four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk, four other battleships were damaged, and eight other ships were either sank or damaged. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, 2,402 personnel were killed and 1,282 were wounded. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan, officially entering World War II. wish I'd heard about the 2010 Zombie Safe House Competition before the deadline back in August. There were only four entries, overall, but I think the winning SS Huckleberry, shown above, would've been hard to beat regardless. I've spent countless hours learning, practicing and honing my processing techniques and I'd like to think that by now I have an eye for a good HDR image. One thing that gets on my nerves is when I see a post on some blog titled "50 Examples of Incredible HDR Photography." It's not the title that bugs me, but the content. So many of these list posts are full of poor examples of HDR photography. Maybe not to the untrained eye, but certainly to an avid HDR enthusiast. Some of the images are great, don't get me wrong, but others are full of over saturation, blatant halo's, blown channels, and just bad imagery. It seems that the extent of these authors involvement in the world of HDR is the time it took to scour the web to create a post for it.

I thought I would do something a little different. I spend pretty much every day of my life in the HDR community. Whether I'm updating my daily blog, chatting with other HDR photographers on Twitter and email, viewing the work of these great photographers on their blogs, or even writing articles on HDR for this site. I am pretty picky about the images I will share with others. If it doesn't blow me away, I don't spend much time looking at it.

What's different about this list of HDR images is that an HDR photographer (your truly) is putting the list together. I'm not saying that my opinion is superior to the next guy, but I think that when it comes to spotting a great HDR image I'm up for the challenge.

Below are a few examples of absolute spot on HDR images from around the world, and all from different photographers. These images (at least in my opinion) represent a handful of the best work the HDR community has to offer. You won't find any halo's, ghosting, blown channels, or muddy whites in these images! Every image was carefully hand picked for excellence in processing and composition.

Note: I've provided links to all these photographers sites. Be sure to click the images to see some more incredible work from these guys. These images are just the beginning!

For more information on HDR Photography, just type "HDR" into the search box at the top of the DPS site.

1.) With that in mind, I have found the perfect gift for all the "Baby Boomers" out there. As a sidebar, the "Baby Boomers" are nowhere close to the term "baby" any more. Nevertheless, we can look back on the TV shows of the day with our children and grandchildren. They will laugh just as much at the show as they will at how much you will laugh.

Sent to you by Sparkie via Google Reader:

Legends Of The Superheroes

via Animated Views by Randall on 11/27/10

Hanna-Barbera (1979), Warner Archive (October 19, 2010), 1 disc, 95 mins plus supplements, 1.33:1 ratio, Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, Not Rated, Retail: $19.95

Storyboard:

The Justice League matches powers with a small army of supervillains in a challenge to save the world, then find themselves subjected to a celebrity roast hosted by Ed McMahon.

The Sweatbox Review:

File this one under: "I never thought I'd see the day…" I never imagined that Warner would ever release this show on DVD. It never occurred to me that they would even consider it. Talk about obscure. Talk about bizarre. Talk about bad! But, with the advent of Warner Archive, their manufacture-on-demand program that offers DVD-R discs for those interested in owning what most would not, it seems that all things are possible. I guess they figured they may as well get a piece of this pie, seeing as how bootlegs of this show have been getting sold at comic conventions for many years, alongside Corman's Fantastic Four and episodes of Mr. Terrific.

For those who haven't seen it, though, you can now own your very own authorized copy of one of the cheesiest comic book adaptations of all time. This was actually a rare, live action show done by famed animation studio Hanna-Barbera, back in the days when they were making cool-for-kids (but really kind of lousy) Super Friends cartoons. I don't know how on earth this live action version came to be, but legendary comic book artist Shelly Moldoff does get recognized for having at least part of the idea in the end credits. The idea seems to have been to create a real-life version of Challenge Of The Superfriends, creating a superhero/supervillain clash on a budget, utilizing state-of-the-art el cheapo effects, and costumes largely consisting of polyester and foam. Two one-hour episodes were produced, aired on separate nights in January of 1979.

The biggest draw was undoubtedly to see Adam West and Burt Ward again as Batman and Robin, as well as Frank Gorshin as The Riddler. The reunion of these television greats seems like a golden idea, but keep in mind that this is now ten years after their hit Batman show, looking a little pudgier and a little sillier in the tights. And Ward is even less convincing at this point in playing a teenage boy! Their casting also points to the tone in the show; though, as it goes, it runs right past camp into outright comedy, particularly the second episode.

And how could it not? The heroes are mostly a bunch of unknowns, but the villains are a who's who of journeyman comedic actors. Just look at The Weather Wizard himself, Jeff Altman. You may not recognize the name, but you've seen him all over the place. He was Hughie Hogg on The Dukes Of Hazard, and had appearances on everything from Mork And Mindy to Archie Bunker's Place. Charlie Callas, who plays Green Lantern's nemesis Sinestro, has a career that dates back to Jackie Gleason and The Munsters, not to mention Mel Brooks movies. Howard Morris got the plum role of mad scientist Dr. Sivana, but he's been seen in everything from Your Show Of Shows to Fantasy Island, and also appeared in Mel Brooks comedies, not to mention voicing characters for Hanna-Barbera cartoons and other studios. Giant-sized Mickey Morton plays Solomon Grundy, making him the only one in the cast to be in both this and the similarly legendarily awful Star Wars Holiday Special (where he played Chewbacca's wife!). Gabriel Dell had been in TV since the 1950s, and here plays Mordru the wizard (even though he pesters the Legion Of Superheroes a thousand years in the future in the comics). Laugh-In's Ruth Buzzi even appears as Aunt Minerva in the second episode.

The heroes include much of the Justice League, but there's no Superman or Wonder Woman, who had other projects that year. Still, this show did give audiences their first live view of Hawkman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Black Canary, and The Huntress; and Captain Marvel appears for the first time since his Filmation series. For the most part, their combined filmography adds up to this show, plus episodes of Supertrain and Dallas, with only Rod Haase (The Flash) having had much of a Hollywood career to speak of.

I will give some credit to the costume department, at least. They had to work with a shoestring budget, but they at least kept things authentic. Our heroes look pretty much just like what they're supposed to, even if someone forgot to tuck in Batman's cowl, Hawkman's helmet looks somewhat ridiculous, and the Flash's lightning bolt points the wrong way. All things considered, they did pretty well. At least Hawkman's wings look good, and Black Canary is indeed wearing fishnets. Yes!

The Challenge
In the first episode, we find that the villains are planning to blow up the world, using a device invented by Dr. Sivana. The Riddler plants clues for our heroes just to give them a fighting chance, while the other villains join in the fun as they distract and delay the superheroes by disguising themselves and generally engaging in shenanigans. See Solomon Grundy pump gas, The Weather Wizard sell Batman a used motorbike (after Batman simply walks away from a fight with Grundy because Grundy's too tough!), The Riddler psychoanalyze Captain Marvel, Dr. Sivana sell lemonade at a street stand, and Sinestro tell Green Lantern's fortune while playing cute as a (female) gypsy fortune teller. And wait until you see Batman chase Mordru on watercraft! It's all very silly, but the comedy chops of the actors involved almost manages to make it acceptable. Marsha Warfield, later to appear on Night Court, has a non-credited role as a lady at a public phone who provides a fun running commentary on the ludicrous events.

The Roast
With disaster averted, the heroes go back to their secret hideout (which looks suspiciously like a re-lit and re-dressed version of the villain's lair), where Ed McMahon (yes, Johnny Carson's second banana) hosts a celebrity-style roast. Dean Martin and Don Rickles may be missing, but fortunately Ed has lined up a number of friends, family, and foes to give it to the superheroes. Also in attendance as a special guest is The Scarlet Cyclone, now known as the aged Retired Man, played by TV veteran William Schallert (Nancy Drew's dad, among many other roles). Familiar actress Pat Carroll (Ursula from The Little Mermaid) appears as Hawkman's hard-done-by mother. Brad Sanders takes on the most notorious role in the show, the cringe worthy Ghetto Man, who berates the heroes for their lack of color (Green Lantern, he says, doesn't count). The villains all get their say, too, to varying degrees of comedy success. Howard Morris seems to be having the most fun, hamming it up to a delightfully massive degree as Dr. Sivana. We also see an interview with the odd couple of The Atom and Giganta, who seem oblivious to the problems inherent in following through on marital commitments.

This is one of those "just-can't-look-away" train wrecks that must be seen to be believed. If you've ever loved the Adam West Batman, DC comic books, or 1970s TV comedians, you may very well be interested in seeing this. Taken as a comedy, it does actually have plenty of funny moments, particularly in The Roast. If you try to take it at all seriously (though the laugh track should give it away!), then it's ludicrously horrible, yet might still survive in the category of "so bad it's good." You know now what you're getting yourself in for. Personally, I think it makes for a great curiosity to show your friends when they're in the mood for a laugh, especially if they know the characters.

Is This Thing Loaded?

Surprisingly, this is one of the very few Warner Archive releases to have bonus material! I know, I can't believe it either. It even gets it's own menu screen, not one of those yucky Warner Archive standard ones that they used to use.

Deleted Scenes And Outtakes (8:25) offers nothing too exciting, but it's neat that they found anything to give us at all. Dr. Sivana conducts physicals at the Roast, Green Lantern waits for the director to shout "Action!", and Solomon Grundy notes that a car horn ruined a shot. Half of the runtime is actually just alternate audio for Mordu's big, evil rendition of That's Entertainment, which comes at the end of The Roast.

Case Study:

The DVD-R comes in a standard keepcase. The photos on the case come out a little fuzzy, owing to the source material. The package makes no mention of the bonus material within.

Ink And Paint:

I suspect that the source material for this disc was a videotape master, or perhaps the show was only shot in 16mm or an otherwise poor film stock— or all of the above. Whatever the reason, the video here is anything but refined, as we see colors bloom and we lose detail. It's not as blurry as the bootlegs I've seen, certainly, but it's far from what one normally expects from DVD. The DVD mastering seems to have been done well, otherwise, with other video artifacts being minimal.

Scratch Tracks:

The audio is not really hissy, but it does sound pretty flat and hollow. Considering what we're watching, and what the source material must have been like, it's really quite decent, though.

Final Cut:

Those of you harbouring bootlegs can pitch those old VHS tapes out and revel in the official DVD release. Those of you that have never seen this show will be amazed at what passed for entertainment in 1979. By now, you should know if this one's for you. Kitschy fun or disco era debacle? You decide!

Animated Classic or Back To The Drawing Board?

<img
