Before the emergence of mass communications through television and eventually the Internet, radio was the unchallenged king of the airwaves. But a group of Montgomery County enthusiasts want the public to know radio communication, though strongly evolved from the era of vacuum tubes, still serves a practical purpose in today's society. On June 27-28, in conjunction with the week-long "Amateur Radio Week," sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, Montgomery County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and County Amateur Radio Enthusiasts (CARE) will open the airwaves for county residents to Amateur Radio at Carl Barton Jr. Park at the Pavilion. Local "hams" will showcase the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and historical Morse code, joining operators from across the nation for public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities. Organizers said amateur radio is coming off what could have been their shining moment after setting up communication stations across the county to direct residents to food, water, ice and other necessities after Hurricane Ike crippled electricity in areas for days on end.
