Ham radio enthusiast PA3FWM constructed this impressive software defined radio, which is capable of capturing nine amateur radio bands (VLF, LF, MF, 160m, 80m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 15m) simultaneously. The system comes complete with a web-based interface that lets you control which band you would like to listen in on. The image that you see above (click for a higher-res version) shows a waterfall graph for each of the radio bands. Active transmissions show up as vertical white stripes, and you can move a small yellow filter to change the frequency that you want to listen to.

There is actually a whole community of people who run stations like this, which you can find at websdr.org. If you're interested in amateur radio but don't have one of your own yet, or would like to see what's happening in other parts of the world, this could be a really fun system to play with!

Telefuture: '80s NBC news segment on future of TV technologies

Start your tape machines! An NBC news report from the eighties that explores "Telefuture," the predicted world of future television in the US. The segment focuses on information services technologies, including Teletext and Viewdata systems.

This is particularly fascinating given that now, in 2010, "convergence" of Internet services back to the television is the latest trend. This video also includes a couple of hopefully interesting/amusing beginning and ending clips bracketing the report.
Oddly, not one mention of Google TV, Apple TV, or YouTube.

More about this segment on Lauren Weinstein's Vortex Video Archive, and more about the techniques used to archive these fantastic old retrofuturistic video clips here: the Betamax Videotape Extraction Lab.

Bonus vintage weird: at 04:38, Alf makes a special appearance.

How Allies Used Math Against German Tanks

via Autopia by Jalopnik on 10/20/10

During World War II, Allied forces readily admitted German tanks were superior to their own. The big question for Allied forces, then, was how many tanks Germany was producing. Knowing that would help them counter the threat. Here's how they reverse-engineered serial numbers to find out.

To solve the problem of determining production numbers, Allied forces initially tried conventional intelligence gathering: spying, intercepting and decoding transmissions and interrogating captured enemies.

Using these methods, the Allies deduced that the German military industrial complex churned out around 1,400 tanks each month from June 1940 through September 1942. That just didn't seem right.

To put that number in context, Axis forces used 1,200 tanks during the Battle of Stalingrad, an eight month battle that resulted in almost two million casualties. That meant the estimate of 1,400 most likely was too high.

Obviously skeptical of that result, the Allies looked for other methods of estimation. That's when they found a critical clue: serial numbers.

Allied intelligence noticed each captured tank had a unique serial number. With careful observation, the Allies were able to determine the serial numbers had a pattern denoting the order of tank production. Using this data, the Allies created a mathematical model to determine the rate of German tank production. They used it to estimate that the Germans produced 255 tanks per month between the summer of 1940 and the fall of 1942.

Turns out the serial-number methodology was spot on. After the war, internal German data put der Führer's production at 256 tanks per month — one more than the estimate.

Here's the math:

Suppose one is an Allied intelligence analyst during World War II, and one has some serial numbers of captured German tanks. Further, assume that the tanks are numbered sequentially from 1 to N. How does one estimate the total number of tanks?

For point estimation (estimating a single value for the total), the minimum-variance unbiased estimator (MVUE, or UMVU estimator) is given by:

where m is the largest serial number observed (sample maximum) and k is the number of tanks observed (sample size). Note that once a serial number has been observed, it is no longer in the pool and will not be observed again.

This has a variance of:

Once they knew how many tanks the Germans were building, the Allies knew how big a force was required to counter it. And that's how Allied mathletes helped win the war.

This story was written by Ray Wert and originally published by Jalopnik on Oct. 19.

NYCC: 7 Reasons Why 'Hanna' Should Be On Your Radar

Until this afternoon, all we really knew about Joe Wright's new film 'Hanna' is that it stars the suddenly precocious Saoirse Ronan as a teenage assassin. That was enough to get me interested, but the wealth of details that Wright, Ronan, and co-star Eric Bana revealed to the New York Comic Con crowd this afternoon - in addition to the two brief clips they brought in tow - have me somewhat convinced that 'Hanna' is going to be one of the spring's most exciting movies when Focus Features release it on April 8, 2011. So here's what we know now:

1. 'Hanna' is 'Leon' meets 'The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser.'

Eric Bana might tell you otherwise, but the whole "cute girl who happens to be a deadly trained killer" thing is rather familiar stuff. From 'Leon' to 'Kick-Ass' to a whole sub-genre of anime titles like 'Gunslinger Girl' and 'Kite,' it can feel like every little girl I see in a movie these days is likely to be concealing an automatic weapon of some kind (this perspective has really tarnished the experience of watching 'A Little Princess'). But Joe Wright is a serious filmmaker (he may have gone a little Joe Wrong* with 'The Soloist,' but all of his films - especially 'Atonement' - are undeniably the work of a filmmaker possessed with a certain consideration and curiosity for his craft), and I was thinking that he wouldn't have accepted stewardship of 'Hanna' if there weren't a bit more to its story. And that's when he busted out the Kaspar Hauser reference, revealing that Hanna isn't just a little girl with a deadly set of talents, but that she's been raised beyond the limits of society and knows nothing of the world at large (as a kid, she had two books: an encyclopedia and a copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales). Or as Saoirse Ronan described her...

Here's a nice homebrew 3d globe, by Russian maker riko. He used a pair of homemade coils to (technically wirelessly) transmit AC power to the device, which then uses an AVR processor and shift registers to power the LEDs. The original is in Russian, however Google translate does a passable translation into English. Source and schematic are available, however I wasn't able to figure out what format the schematic is in.

Amanda Boxtel's excitement is contagious. That's because she's been taking the recently unveiled Berkeley Bionics eLEGS exoskeleton for a walk in the park. Not the easiest thing to do if you've been in a wheelchair for the last 18 years.

Based on their HULC military exoskeleton and going into medical trials soon, Berkeley Bionics eLEGS have set a new precedent for rehabilitation and personal mobility going forward. [via BotJunkie]

This is not a wave of the future. The eLEGS is happening right now. I don't have to be hopeful. This is reality.

First, I want to apologize to the creator of this post.  I reposted it without permission.  This was presumptuous of me.  I intended no disrespect.  I use my blog primarily to capture information, ideas, adventures and fun items that I would like to review later.  I enjoyed the trip post from Alaska.  My family and I have traveled there several times and enjoyed each trip.  Denali and towns along the Inside Passage are unmatched for their rugged beauty.  If we could, my family and I would like to live there.  Again, please excuse me.

Now, I am pleased to report that the author of this post gave me permission to attach a link to his site.  Please enjoy the post and thank the author for sharing his travels.

Brazil's Killer Kid Bass Player Prodigy!

Pausing from our regularly scheduled guitar programming to bring you Michael David Pipoquinha of Brazil.

    If I could read Brazilian-Portuguese...
I'd give ya more info, BUT what more do you really need to know that you aren't seeing and hearing in the clip above? Obviously we're looking at a very young man who is one badass musician! Lot's of Youtube stuff on Mr. Pipoquinha, and I'm sure many of our bass player pals are already hip. But don't assume anything, and be sure to treat them to this phenomenon.
