Amateur Radio Operators Send Help After Quake: MIAMI -- When the earthquake rocked Haiti, vital communication to save those who were injured flat-lined. Phone lines and radio towers were mangled crippling relief efforts. A group of amateurs called the shots and saved lives in the days and weeks following the quake. Transmitting through Haiti's smoke and debris came a signal of hope from Miami. "Right now, they are coordinating some helicopters that are doing a rescue," said architect Julio Ripoll over the hum of his radio. Ripoll is a volunteer ham, or amateur radio, operator. He picked up the hobby in the 1990s while volunteering at South Florida's hurricane center. Since January, he said his firm was practically put on hold as he monitored the airwaves coming out of Haiti. "Whenever there is a major disaster, it seems we can communicate when everything else goes down," he said.Things you can do from here:
